Landline by Rainbow Rowell Review

Georgie McCool knows her marriage is in trouble. That it’s been in trouble for a long time. She still loves her husband, Neal, and Neal still loves her, deeply — but that almost seems beside the point now. Maybe that was always beside the point. Two days before they’re supposed to visit Neal’s family in Omaha for Christmas, Georgie tells Neal that she can’t go. She’s a TV writer, and something’s come up on her show; she has to stay in Los Angeles. She knows that Neal will be upset with her — Neal is always a little upset with Georgie — but she doesn’t expect to him to pack up the kids and go home without her. When her husband and the kids leave for the airport, Georgie wonders if she’s finally done it. If she’s ruined everything. That night, Georgie discovers a way to communicate with Neal in the past. It’s not time travel, not exactly, but she feels like she’s been given an opportunity to fix her marriage before it starts . . . Is that what she’s supposed to do? Or would Georgie and Neal be better off if their marriage never happened?

This book was one of my most anticipated books of 2014 and I expected so much from Landline. However, I was severely disappointed. The book was so slow, I often got bored and had to put it down, which is unlike me. In addiction to that, the ending didn't satisfy me at all. In the end, there was no solution to the main character's conflict in my opinion, and I didn't see a point to the main character's struggle in the story if there wasn't a solution. The only good thing I found in this book was when we got to see how two characters from her previous books were doing, and I was so happy that little tidbit was in there. I wish I could say this book is one of my favorites but sadly, it's far from it. I give it two out of five stars.

  1. Oh no! That's the worst when you wait for a book like that and it doesn't live up to your expectations at all:( Darn. I was really looking forward to this. Unfortunately, you're not the only person who has had this opinion....

    1. It really is, and I was so disappointed with it too. I wish I could say it was amazing but it just fell flat...Really? The only reviews I have seen are ones where they are raving about Landline. I thought I was the only one who didn't like it.
